What helped Yellowstone such a cultural phenomenon is the show’s dedication to taking risks — especially with on-screen death.
The hit series, which premiered on Paramount in 2018. followed the fictional Dutton familyowners of the largest ranch in Montana. Many spectators came for Kevin Costner‘s portrayal of family patriarch John Dutton and stayed on for other major roles on the show, including Kelly Riley, Wes Bentley, Gil Birmingham, Cole Hauser and Kelsey Asbille.
Despite its almost immediate success, Yellowstone famously confronted some the main obstacles behind the scenes. In February 2023, rumors initially surfaced about Costner’s future Yellowstone amid the alleged tension between him and the creator Taylor Sheridan over the recording schedule. Season 5 dropped the first batch of episodes a month early, while production on the second half was booked.
After a long hiatus, Costner confirmed in early 2024 that he he wouldn’t come back to the series. John was later killed off – and Costner didn’t hold back on his character’s death.
“I’ll be completely honest – I didn’t know it was being broadcast last night.” It is a moment of swearing in God. I was seeing ads with my face everywhere and I was like, ‘God, I’m not into that.’ But I didn’t realize it was a thing yesterday,” Costner said on SiriusXM Program by Michael Smerkonish in November 2024. “I heard it was suicide, so that doesn’t make me rush to see it.”
Despite the alleged tensions, other cast members continued to support the expansion Yellowstone universe — an offshoot centered around Beth (Reilly) and Rip (Hauser) allegedly picked up in the middle Yellowstoneis the fifth season.
