After the official parting with Gary O’Neill following a late 2-1 defeat to relegation rivals Ipswich Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers they are now reportedly looking for a potential replacement who is currently enjoying a six-game winning streak.
Many believed West Ham United would be O’Neill’s last game against fellow manager under pressure Julen Lopetegui. But even after another crushing defeat, Wolves have backed their manager and reiterated that they will get the reinforcements he desperately needs in the January transfer window. A week later, however, defeat at Ipswich proved a step too far and O’Neill was shown the door.
Release of the statement following the removal of O’Neill, the president Jeff Shi said: “We are very grateful to Gary for all his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team all the best for the future.”
Four points adrift of Premier League safety and in the midst of a packed festive period of games, the Midlands club must find a replacement as soon as possible and get their next fixture right.

Gary O’Neill is under serious pressure at Molineux.
On that front, names such as David Moyes and more recently Vitor Pereira has been mentioned and David Ornstein has gone so far as to suggest that the Midlands club is working on an agreement to appoint a manager of al-Shabaab. But the former Fenerbahce boss is not the only one stealing the headlines.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Wolves are now looking to John Eustace to replace O’Neill following his impressive form in charge of Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, and a trusted reporter invited him to watch.
The Blackburn boss has guided his side to six wins in a row and as a result took them within five points of automatic promotion. Leading them from the relegation battle to the play-offs, Eustace is a manager on the rise.
While Eustace deserves plenty of praise for his time in charge of Birmingham City, which was abruptly ended by a decision he will regret, and now at Blackburn Rovers, Wolves are in no position to take any chances. Experience should be what they are looking for, not what would be unknown in the Premier League.
The likes of Moyes stand out as a far safer appointment and one more likely to stop the ship at Molineux. Eustace, meanwhile, does not have the experience to offer such a guarantee. Instead, the Blackburn boss could be an option he can turn to if Wolves manage to retain their place in the Premier League and make a fresh start in the summer.
HLTCO was among those to praise Eustace after he was controversially sacked by Birmingham, who suffered relegation following the sacking of their manager, describing the job he did at the time as “solid”.
Of course, it was Eustace who had the last laugh and with Birmingham sitting in League One, he could land the biggest job of his managerial career to date if Wolves come calling in the next week.
