The Witcher 4, starring Ciri, announced at The Game Awards

Fans of the Witcher series are in for a treat Game Awards 2024 in Los Angeles — a six-minute trailer revealing The Witcher 4, prominently featuring an adult Ciri, Geralt of Rivia’s adopted daughter.

Geralt was nowhere to be found in the trailer, which doesn’t mean he isn’t in the game. But Ciri will take center stage in the game as the protagonist, notes CD Projekt Red in a press release. While there was no gameplay in the trailer, it focused on the keys to the Witcher games: using steel and silver swords with a bit of magic (along with a new chain weapon) to take down gruesome monsters.

While Studio CD Projekt Red described the trailer as a short story, suggesting that it may not represent the game’s plot, it contained themes that will likely reflect the game: a young villager preparing for a ritual sacrifice to a local monster, which Ciri goes in to kill. But when she returns to the villagers, she finds the girl dead in the middle of a call to the gods – to which the white-haired witch angrily says: “There are no gods here – only monsters.” Jeez!

While it didn’t show gameplay, the studio noted that the trailer was made using assets and models from the game itself. CD Project Red also teased that it’s built into Unreal Engine 5 on an “unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU.”

CD Projekt Red has not announced a release date or an indication of when the game will be released, or on which platforms it will be released.
