In the end, Paul and Lydia confess their daughter Emily (Chloe East), it was he who pulled the trigger. Jacob had been involved in several house robberies in their neighborhood and after returning from his latest robbery, Emily got scared and shot him for she didn’t realize it was her brother.
The twists and turns continued, however: it turned out that it was actually another gun that was responsible for Jacob’s death. All signs pointed to their neighbor JD (Luke Wilson) but it turned out to be his wife (Linda Cardellini), who slept with Jacob and then shot him whom he threatened with exposure their affair.

When No Good Deed began, Paul was focused on selling his and Lydia’s home. He was even more motivated when Mikey (Dennis Leary) — who turned out to be his brother — started threatening him for money. Viewers slowly learned that Paul sought Mickey’s help when he found his son Jacob dead. Mikey covered it up, but after going to prison for another crime, he wanted payback for the secrets he kept from Paul.
All season long, Paul has been trying to get Mikey back in prison. He switched gears when Lydia made a brief appearance to kill Mikey. But when it turned out that Mikey was fine, Paul locked him in a secret room in the house and kept him in prison. By the end of the season, Paul and Lydia’s marriage was falling apart from the secrets they had to keep. They they could still work things out when Lidia saw Pavle talking to their son about wanting to mend their relationship.
When Paul and Lydia found out who really killed their son, they were able to sell their home and start over.
The first season focused mostly on Lydia’s grief and how the guilt over Jacob’s death contributed to her deteriorating mental health. Lydia began to have reservations about selling their home when she noticed lights flickering on and off in Jacob’s room—something she took as a sign that her son was still texting her.
Lydia’s determination led to Mikey’s death, which turned out to be a false alarm. Then she crossed paths with her neighbor Margo. That short friendship fell apart once, Lydia realized that Margo was nursing her teenage son and then killed him. After putting the pieces together, Lydia was able to start playing the piano again and reconnected with her daughter.
No Good Deed introduced Margo as a woman in a loveless marriage who wants to move on. Margo was also one of the people interested in Morgan’s home, which she tried to manipulate JD’s wife into buying for them. As the series unfolded, it became clear that Margot had been spreading a lot of lies. She didn’t tell JD that she grew up poor and stalked him on purpose so they could get married and she would have access to his money.
Margo didn’t tell Lydia about her relationship with Jacobwhich led to his death. The lies caught up with Margo and she almost died in her home after an accidental fire. In her final scene, Margo was on the run (and half her face burned beyond recognition), but Mikey’s son, Nate (Kevin Alves), he tracked her down and she was arrested.
JD was originally one of the main suspects because of his confusing behavior. After becoming a famous soap opera, JD was murdered and his mental health forced him to appear on set with a gun. He started the season without a break, as he went beyond his means to please Margo. Their marriage once broke up he found out about her affairwhich then turned out to be a multiple affair.
Jacob was killed by JD’s gun, but he wasn’t the one holding it when it fired. Before Margo could take the blame, JD left her and turned his life around. The season ended with him working on a new project that could potentially be a Taylor Sheridan production based on the horse and cowboy hat he was rocking for the scene.
One of the potential couples vying for ownership of Morgan was Carla (Teionah Parris) and Dennis (OT Fagbenle). They were weeks away from welcoming their first baby after tying the knot earlier that year – just months after their first date. Carla struggled to adjust to her new normal which included Dennis’ mother being too involved in his life.
After Dennis’ mother tried to buy a house with them, Carla made an offer on a second home with her estranged father’s money. Carla and Dennis eventually changed their minds and returned to the race for the Morgan home, but they weren’t the ones who won it. By the end of the season, Carla and Dennis were new parents and she had reconciled with her off-screen dad. The only problem? Carla didn’t know her dad sent her a huge check that Dennis cashed. Instead, Dennis lied that he got it from was selling his new book and now Karla’s dad was sending him threatening messages.
Another couple trying to bring Morgan home was Leslie (Abbi Jacobson) and Sarah (Poppy Liu). After giving up on continuing IVF, Leslie and Sarah turned to finding their forever home. This leads them to dig into a murder that happened in the house and this leads to Lydia solving the case. Despite Leslie giving up on expanding her family, Sarah secretly continued with the injections and was close to giving birth by the finale.
Leslie and Sarah in the end they were chosen people to live in the home of Lidia and Pavle.
Paul’s brother was originally introduced as a mysterious man who was looking for money. As the season continued, Paul and Mikey’s childhood in their home was told through flashbacks. It explained why Mikey initially helped Paul cover up Jacob’s murder—and why he was now threatening Paul for money. Siblings could exercise their differences, but not before Paul locked Mikey in a secret room of the house. Eventually, Mikey escaped and helped find Jacob’s real killer and reconnected with his son, Nate.
