The acting president of South Korea spoke with Biden by phone, Reuters reports


SEOUL (Reuters) – Acting South Korean President Han Duk-su spoke by phone with U.S. President Joe Biden, Han’s office said on Sunday.

“South Korea will carry out its foreign and security policy without interference and strive to ensure that the South Korea-US alliance is maintained and developed stably,” his statement said.

Biden told Han that the ironclad US-South Korea alliance remains intact and that the United States will work together with South Korea to further develop and strengthen the US-South Korea alliance as well as trilateral cooperation between South Korea, Japan and the United States, the statement added .

Prime Minister Han became South Korea’s acting president following Saturday’s impeachment of Jun Suk Yeol.

After parliament voted to impeach Yun after his short-lived attempt to impose martial law, Yun was suspended from exercising presidential powers, and the constitution requires the prime minister to take on an acting role.
