It’s here again: The 2025 tax season is just one month away. And that means it’s time to start getting yours tax papers together and making a plan for how you will file your taxes. It’s also time to start saving money on a potential tax bill or yes pay your estimated taxes now.
Since tax season tends to creep up in the post-holiday haze, it’s important to note the main tax filing and payment deadlines. While most states follow the federal government’s schedule, some have their own deadlines. Here are the key dates you need to know to get you through this tax season.

The IRS has not yet announced an official start date for tax filing season, for those looking to get an early start on filing, but tax filing typically opens in late January. In 2024, tax season began on Monday, January 29.
We will update this story with the exact dates when the IRS makes the 2025 announcement.
Also note that employers are required to send their employees V-2 and 1099 income tax forms by the end of January.
The official deadline for most people to file their federal tax returns is Tuesday 15.04.2025.
However, there are a few exceptions. The Tax Administration offers extensions in case of a a disaster. For example, those directly affected Hurricane Helena will have until May 1, 2025 to submit various tax returns for individuals and companies and make tax payments. Military personnel serving overseas or in a combat zone may also be approved additional time for archiving.

Please note that submitting a deferral does not change the payment deadline – it only gives you an extension until Wednesday 15 October to complete the relevant paperwork. You still need to submit any payments you owe by April 15 to avoid late fees.
Nine states do not charge income tax. These states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Among them, New Hampshire and Washington impose taxes on certain types of income, such as earnings from stocks and investments, but do not tax income earned from employment.
Of the 41 states that impose a state income tax, most adhere to the April 15 federal filing deadline. However, there are some exceptions. Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, and Virginia have different deadlines for state tax day 2025. There are also regions in several states that have until May 1, 2025 to file federal tax returns for individuals and businesses due to natural disasters, including hurricanes Helena and Milton.
Remember, an extension of time to file a claim is not an extension to pay the taxes you owe. Check with yours state department of revenue for the most up-to-date information on key deadlines.
Taxpayers who submit their returns electronically and who are due for a refund can expect within 21 daysaccording to the tax administration. If you’ve claimed Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit, you can expect to get your refund by February 27 – this is if you file your return online, choose to receive your refund via direct deposit, and have no issues with your return. By law, the IRS has to wait until mid-February to issue these refunds, so you can’t get them sooner. This time applies to the entire refund, not just the portion related to the specific credit you claimed on your tax return.
