I found an important study on Clarence Bass’ website here. A study of strength training among retirees found that strenuous exercise is essential for preserving muscle mass. The study compared a group that did heavy resistance training with a moderate-intensity group, as well as a control group that did not exercise. Muscle mass was effectively preserved for the heavy resistance group after four years. The heavy-resistance group used weight machines, while the moderate-resistance group used resistance bands and bodyweight exercises. I would like to clarify that you can still lift heavy with resistance bands, you just have to use them more.
Bottom line, go hard! Clarence keeps stressing it and I’ve mentioned it sometimes or as well. It’s nice to see that proven, especially for us seniors, in a clear study like this one.
