Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively both are Hollywood A-listers, but are committed to giving their children a regular life.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on Friday, December 13th Deadpool the actor talked about his family.
Reynolds and Lively share four children together: daughters James (9), Inez (8) and Betty (5), as well as son Olin, whom they welcomed in early 2023.
“We try to give them as normal a life as possible,” Reynolds said.
“I try not to force a difference between their childhood and my childhood or my wife’s,” the actor continued, reflecting on his and Blake’s upbringing and how his perspective on raising children has changed.
“We both grew up working class, and I remember when they were very young, I would say or think, like, ‘Oh my God, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid,’ or, ‘I would never have had this luxury to take takeout, or whatever,” Reynolds said.
“Then I realized that it wasn’t really their bag of rocks to carry,” he said, adding that his children began to show their own values. “They are already very much in touch with gratitude and understand enough of the world to have a strong sense of empathy.”
Reynolds explained how his children make him and Lively feel secure in their parenting style.
“Those are the things that I would think (that would indicate) we’re doing well — if our kids can empathize with other people and other kids,” he said, but acknowledged that, no matter what, his kids will grow up with a different childhood than the one he had.
“Yeah, it’s different,” he told THR. “When I was a kid, I’d just vacuum it up, leave the house and be back by sundown, which I can’t even imagine now.”
Reynolds also addressed the recent news that he will be taking a break from filming.
“I’m still working in terms of writing, whether it’s about Boy Band or something else that I can’t talk about yet.” “I don’t have an ’empty hands are the devil’s toy’ problem,” he said. “If I’m not working, I don’t crave it all the time.” Boredom is also a very underrated asset these days. We as a society are just partying ourselves to death 24/7. The best ideas I’ve ever had have always been born out of boredom, where your mind is allowed to wander and go into that kind of stasis of being and doing nothing.”
