pregnant Yellowjackets star Samantha Hanratty she is about to have her first child, a boy cleft lip surgery shortly after he was born.
“My baby will be born with a cleft lip.” We’re not 100 percent sure, and we probably won’t know 100 percent until he’s born, if he has a palate,” Hanratty, 29, said Friday, Dec. 13, TikTok video for Babilist. “His goes all the way up to his nose.”
Hanratty and her husband, Christian DeAndahe announced in August that they are expecting a baby. The couple later learned that the fetus had a cleft lip. According to the Mayo Clinic, cleft lip occurs when the upper lip is not fully formed before birth.
Hanratty and DeAda’s son will have to undergo a series of procedures to correct the birth defect.
“At three weeks, he’s going to have his first operation, where he’s going to close it,” Hanratty told Babilist. “One thing we were really mindful of was our language around it. There is nothing to fix, nothing wrong with it. Right now it’s open and he’s going to have a really big smile and we’re going to close and it’s going to be a little bit smaller.”
Hanratty also acknowledged the potential “difficulties” that could arise from her baby’s cleft lip and subsequent surgery.
“Probably.” she will not be able to breastfeed“, she explained. “We will have special vials for him, and then there will be many more operations depending on the severity of the place on the palate, if it is on the palate.”
Hanratty went on to note that “there are definitely moments where (she) definitely” feels sad, but overall she’s “really happy to be his mom.”

The actress added that at that moment she felt her son kick, which he often does whenever she mentions his cleft.
“One time my husband and I were crying about it in bed and (he) went to lay on my stomach, and he hit my husband really hard,” Hanratty recalled. “(Christian) was like, ‘OK, dude. It’s okay, I get it.’ You’ll be fine.’ So he’s letting us know there’s nothing to worry about.”
Hanratty first confirmed in September TikTok saw that her son would be born with a cleft lip.
“At first the news was obviously shocking because it doesn’t exist in my family, it doesn’t exist in my husband’s family,” Hanratty said at the time. “The biggest thing we all want is we want our kids to be happy and our kids to be healthy.” … I think both me and my husband are at peace with the fact that we know he’s going to be OK.”
