Having sold more than 50 million copies and been translated into more than 40 languages – not to mention winning the Nobel Prize for Literature – Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude is rightly considered a classic of the 20th century.
The sprawling epic was long considered unrecordable, but Netflix made the bold move to adapt the novel into a 16-episode series split into two parts.
Set in the fictional Colombian city of Maconda, it tells the story of cousins Jose Arcadio Buendia (played by Marco Gonzalez and later Diego Vasquez) and Ursula Iguaran (Susana Morales and later Marleida Soto) who are married against their parents’ wishes. The story spans seven generations of the Buendia family, interweaving themes of sexuality, fantasy, revolution and, well, loneliness.
Marquez, who died in 2014, famously turned down all requests for a film version of his masterpiece during his lifetime due to the complexity of the book’s narrative. With this highly anticipated TV series said to be religiously faithful relative to the original text, the on-screen story appears to be true to its source material.

When to watch One Hundred Years of Solitude: Part 1
The first eight-episode installment of this lavish TV adaptation premieres worldwide on Netflix on Wednesday, December 11. Eight episodes of the second part should follow in 2025.
