The next wave of Apple Intelligence functions are represented by iOS 18.2including the ability to craft custom emoji and get information about what’s ahead using Visual intelligence. They join existing enhancements such as writing tools and Cleaning tool in Apple Photos.
But installing the latest updates doesn’t automatically add Apple Intelligence features to your devices. You will need to request access to Apple Intelligence and join the waiting list. Here’s how to get started with new AI technologies.

Apple Intelligence features require powerful processors, so Apple has limited support for Apple Intelligence to the following devices:
If your device is not listed, Apple Intelligence will not work.
During the development and public betas of iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.2, Apple gradually introduced waves of Apple Intelligence features. Although many new features run locally on your iPhone, some tasks are outsourced to Apple Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.
Note that AI functions are usually computationally intensive, which is why Google Gemini and OpenAI manage most of their processing in the cloud. They can distribute the task across hundreds or thousands of processors around the world. Apple’s Private Cloud Compute technology does the same thing, but with arguably fewer processors.
Rather than risk overwhelming the servers with millions of concurrent requests as iOS 18.2 is widely adopted, the Apple Intelligence queue gives Apple the ability to increase computing load.

After you download and install iOS 18.2 on your iPhone – you made a backup copy before the upgrade right? – open the Settings app and go to Apple Intelligence & Siri (previously just Siri).
At the top of the settings, tap Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist > Join the Waitlist.
How long it will take to grant access is unknown. On my beta developer iPhone it took a few hours, while others got in after a few minutes. As things have increased for posting, the waiting time may be longer.
As one example, when I used the iOS 18.2 developer beta, which included the new Image Playground app for creating Genmoji and AI-generated artwork, I had to wait a few weeks before I could start playing with them. With iOS 18.2 now widely available, it remains to be seen what the waiting list will be like.
