Meta suffered a major outage across its social media and messaging apps on Wednesday, with Instagram, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads all affected. By late afternoon, the apps were almost fully functional again.
“Thank you for being with us! We’re 99% of the way there – just doing the final checks,” Meta announced on X at 2:26 PM PT/5:56 PM ET. “We apologize to those affected by the outage.”
Instagram outage reports started rising around 10:00 a.m. PT, according to Downdetector, and at the same time it reached Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads. (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by the same parent company as CNET, Ziff Davis.)
Instagram was showing error messages on the web version, and the mobile app was spinning when users tried to refresh their feeds. Although Stories appeared to be working, the “next” tab also displayed the message “Unable to load activity”. Within a few hours, the reports started to drop, although the pages were still slow to load and would only load posts that were hours old.
“We are aware that a technical issue is affecting some users’ ability to access our applications,” Meta published on Ks at 10:48 a.m. PT. “We are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”
Cisco ThousandEyes attributes outburst to “internal server errors and timeouts, which may indicate problems with Meta’s back-end services.”
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment on what caused the outage and when it will be fixed.
People used X (formerly known as Twitter) to post about the disappearance of Instagramasking if others have had the same loading errors and yes share memes about the experience.
