England made one change for the third and final Test against New Zealand at Seddon Park. Matthew Potts returned to the game replacing KSI Chris Woakes.Potts will be playing his 10th Test as England look to win the series 3-0. Potts impressed with 31 wickets at an average of 28.22.
Captain Ben Stokes highlighted Potts’ strength and versatility. “This is another opportunity to look at one of the fast bowlers who we see playing a big role in the future,” Stokes said of Potts’ selection. “Two-zero up, you’ve obviously put yourself in an easier position to make a change.”
“Potsey’s got a huge motor on him. He can work all day, bowl a lot of overs, but not only that, he’s a very skilful bowler, which he’s gotten better at since he’s here, working with Jimmy (Anderson) on a few Overs he is someone who is another all-round bowler, you can use him with the new ball, plan on which we go because he can give you 20 overs one day and then swing again and give you another 20.”
Chris Woakes will miss the final Test but made a key contribution with his outstanding performance. The veteran seamer took six wickets at an average of 29.16. He silenced critics who questioned his record abroad. Stokes praised Woakes’ impact, highlighting his crucial dismissal Kane Williamson.
Woakes’ overseas average improved marginally from 51 to 48.93 after his solid performance in Pakistan and New Zealand.
“Chris Woakes came into the winter tours with a bit of hype behind his hosting but I think what he did over the winter proved a lot of people wrong,” Stokes said. “He was fantastic, he was great in Pakistan and quite influential here.”
