Beachy style with aging in place features

Heavy fixtures like a built-in jetted tub, a water closet, and a pony-walled corner shower ate up most of the couple’s 166-square-foot bathroom. Looking to loosen up the look and add the stylish features of aging in place, they turned to designer and project manager Amanda Davis.

Davis removed the tub, walls around the water closet and pony walls around the shower area to create a more airy footprint with more room to maneuver. A curbless shower with an ADA-compliant wide entry and grab bars inside (and next to the toilet) add future-proof features. Noting that much of the art in the home was inspired by the ocean, Davis added a custom mural made from mosaic marble pieces that give the impression of coastal mist enveloping the shower walls. A similar mosaic adorns an arched alcove containing a walnut bench and storage cupboard. Soothing sea green granite slabs form the worktops and wrap around the lower part of the shower and pony walls. A walnut vanity visually adds warmth, while heated floors do so literally.
