Apple is reportedly working on an in-house Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip


Apple plans to phase out the technology that currently powers its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections in favor of an in-house chip, further reducing its dependence on third-party providers, according to a report on Thursday.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has been developing a chip under the code name Prokima for several years. The chip is expected to debut in iPhones and smart home devices starting next year, replacing technology currently supplied by Broadcom.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The move would be in line with Apple’s ongoing efforts to design more of its own core components and expand its hardware ecosystem. A custom-made chip could also boost product performance and enhance advanced features like artificial intelligence in its devices.

The company is too as expected to introduce its own cellular modem chips in 2025. It currently manufactures its own line of M chips for its Mac computers.

In other Apple news, the company also plans to start making AirPods in India for the first time in early 2025, diversifying some of its production out of China, according to another Bloomberg. report.

Last year, Foxconn invested $200 million to build a new factory in India to produce AirPods, after it won an order to produce wireless headphones for Apple.
