The biopic earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Picture. Maestro tells the story of conductor Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) and his relationship with actor Felicia Montalegre (Carey Mulligan). Godzilla Minus One is an Academy Award-winning Japanese language film written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Set in 1945, it centers on Koichi Shikishima, a young pilot dealing with PTSD in the post-World War II era. After surviving an encounter with Godzilla, he and the others realize that a kaiju is preparing to attack Tokyo. The Sony film is now available to stream on Netflix.
The award-winning film, Snow Society, is based on true events and adapted from the book of the same name. In 1972, a rugby team from Uruguay boarded a plane to Chile for a game. The plane crashed in the Andes mountains, leaving the survivors to struggle with injuries, illness, freezing temperatures and death. Not everyone makes it, and those who face death make painful choices to live.
If you weren’t there at the time, it’s hard to explain how huge We Are the World was. Recorded by a supergroup of popular musicians—gathered in motion on the night of the 1985 American Music Awards—the benefit single for Ethiopian famine victims sold over 20 million copies and featured Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen. and Diana Ross. (It’s impossible to imagine so many mega-stars gathering in one room for something like this today.) Luckily for us, the cameras were rolling the entire time as dozens of the world’s most famous musicians recorded the epic all-night session. Recently departed Quincy Jones proves the true star of the evening, wrangling a studio full of nerves, egos and a little too much wine to produce something truly special.
A standalone sequel to the 2019 hit Knives Out, The Glass Arch follows detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig)’s mission to uncover a mysterious death, after tech billionaire Miles Bronn (Edward Norton) invites friends to his private Greek island. The film contains fun plot twists and is broken up by lighthearted humor and aloof characters played by the star.
An absorbingly disturbing psychological thriller, Leave the World Behind chronicles the strange events that occur during a family getaway in a lavish rental home. A blackout renders their phones, televisions, and other electronics useless, and two strangers appear at the door. TikTok has been flooded with footage and analysis of this apocalypse movie, with people pondering potential “hidden messages” and real-life parallels. Check it out and see what you think.
Martha Stewart may seem enigmatic, but in the Netflix documentary Martha, she talks about her life, from her rise as the first self-made billionaire to the end of a stormy divorce and prison time for lying to the feds. The film has been floating around in Netflix’s Top Ten since its release earlier this fall. Whether you love the woman or hate her, she stays true to herself throughout the film, never for a moment compromising her high standards.
This animated drama, based on the graphic novel of the same name, is set in a futuristic medieval world, where a knight (Riz Ahmed) is framed for a crime. A teenage girl named Nimona (Chloe Grace Moretz) – whom he has been training to destroy – may be his only hope to prove his innocence.
This biopic is about two sisters, Yusra (Natalie Issa) and Sara Mardini (Manal Issa), who are fleeing war-torn Syria. Amidst all the strife and upheaval, Yusra works towards her dream of swimming at the Olympics. It is a moving story of hope and survival.
A World War I drama based on the classic novel of the same name, this epic depicts the horrors of war through the eyes of 17-year-old German soldier Paul Baumer (Felix Kammerer). At first enthusiastic about joining the military—against his parents’ wishes—Baumer gets a violent wake-up call. All Quiet on the Western Front was a dominant force at the 95th Academy Awards, as it was nominated for nine Academy Awards and ended up walking away with four, including Best International Feature Film.
Annette Bening and Jodie Foster were nominated for Oscars (Best and Best Supporting Actress, respectively) for their roles in NIAD, the Netflix original about marathon swimmer Diana Naiad and her devoted coach Bonnie Stoll. The remarkable true story is not an entire biopic, but a chapter in Niad’s accomplished life when, at the age of 60, Niad became obsessed with completing the grueling, near-impossible 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. Determined to become the first person to complete the swim without a shark cage, the film is the story of Niada’s determination, fueled by the support of those closest to her.
Netflix is known for its original holiday movies, and the streaming giant has been releasing some popular ones for several years. With its latest Christmas movie, Hot Frosty, the company goes full fan service, referencing many of those older films, including Falling for Christmas and A Christmas Prince (there’s also a sly Mean Girls joke). It also gives fans of Hallmark family holiday movies a little more skin than they’re used to. When Kathy (Lacey Chaber) puts an enchanted scarf on the snowman with chiseled abs (just for that matter), he comes alive and she finds purpose and joy while he’s around. The near-perpetual shirtless snowman, Jack, is played by Shit Creek star Dustin Milligan, and let’s just say he’s working out lot since he played Ted.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse wasn’t just one of the best animated movies of 2023, it was one of the best movies of the year, period. The animated superhero film brings together different versions of Peter Parker/Spider-Man from across time and space, using a portal to connect their worlds as they battle the supervillain known as Spot. Packed with dozens of familiar voices, from Shameik Moore to Jason Schwartzman and Hailee Steinfeld, the film is the first half of the epic saga that will end with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which may not arrive until 2027.
