It’s the rare living room that doesn’t require a rug. Even in a carpeted room, a rug helps define the seating area and make the room feel complete. So if you don’t already have a rug or the one you have doesn’t reflect your current taste, this is a good opportunity to refresh.

If you’re trying to make a formal living space more casual, consider a plain weave rug or a natural fiber rug (such as jute). Shaggy rugs with asymmetrical patterns or high-low textures are a good bet if you want to add a contemporary element to your room. In terms of color, light colors tend to make a room feel larger, while darker colors make it feel cozier. And the busier the patterns of your other textiles, the simpler your rug can be, and vice versa.

At least as important as the style of your rug is its size. A common recommendation is that all the legs of your furniture – or at least the front legs of your seat – should be on the carpet. If you love your current rug, but it’s too small or misshapen, you can upgrade to a larger one. Natural fiber rugs or neutral-toned wool rugs are often a good, affordable choice as a base layer. A small, colorful but well-worn antique Persian or Moroccan rug can look wonderful over a large jute rug, for example.

All that said, the “perfect rug” is not a specific size or style. It’s the one you like best that fits your lifestyle and budget.
